I had been looking forward to this book. I’ve recently enjoyed The Thirteenth Sign series by the same author and the teaser made this book seem interesting. A shifter who can’t shift and has to find her place in the paraworld, yep, I wanted to read more about that. Sadly, the fmc here is a dud.The author tells readers that a leather duster*, leather pants*, boots, black eyeliner, and a pony tail means that the fmc is the best of the best as a pack enforcer. What she describes is the character’s physical appearance, not her skills or abilities. Nevertheless, the author claims that the fmc is great at doing her administrative job for the pack because of the aforementioned wardrobe. Strangely, however, when the author described the fmc acting as an enforcer, she was not, in fact, good at it. It made for a bit of an anathema.Following the inciting incident, I was left wondering why anyone would want to be part of the Lycan Pack. I would have respected the fmc more if she embraced the inheritance from her mother if she told the pack to kick rocks. Her father treated her badly. The Alpha treated her badly. Oh, and her fated mate throws her over for another woman on the say so of her father and the Alpha.Instead of standing up for herself, she then trots off to Hawthorne Cove to betray the people and packs there. Gosh. What a charmer. The remainder of the characters are equally icky.*Surely I cannot be the only person who pictures Ross Gellar from Friends whenever authors use leather clothing as a short hand in lieu of writing actual characters? The sweating. The baby powder.
