Disclosure: I've been an amateur woodworker for several decades and have assembled a nice collection of instructional books and videos over the years. That said, I'm completely confused as to which reader the author was targeting. There's little hard-won insight offered to a fellow, seasoned craftsperson and yet, barely enough information to enable a novice to create sound joinery. And, what is contained is readily available with a quick we search. For example, the author notes that hollow chisel mortisers are difficult to adjust, and I agree whole-heatedly. What's missing is a discussion of adjusting the chisel square to the fence and setting the correct protrusion of the bit from the end of the chisel. The former ups the chance of getting a glueable mortice surface and the later is necessary to balance the ability to remove the sawdust (large gap) with the propensity to overheat the drill bit (small gap). He laments machine-cut dovetails, correctly pointing out that router bit shanks are too big for cutting elegant, thin pins. This is an argument in favor of hand-cut tails, which many people hold out as an aesthetic standard. Two issues here. First, on the page facing the criticism of machined dovetails lives a description of how to cut the joint on a bandsaw. Done well, these can come awfully close to the appearance of hand cut ones. More to the point, there's a missing discussion about the (lack of) need for dovetails in the age of modern glues. For that matter, since (through) dovetails, regardless of how they're cut, tend to be fidfly to produce, the tenancy is to make fewer of them per joint. This is contrary to one of the objectives of cutting the joint in the first place, which involves increased the amount of side (face) grain glue surface. A quick way to increase side grain face area is by cutting finger or box joints, a subject that isn't discussed at all. The information provided for hand-cutting dovetails isn't sufficient for creating anything short of frustration. Better to research the work done by Rob Cosman.I've seen pictures and videos of Marc's work and I'm sure he knows a ton about joinery, but it seems that this book lacks a healthy fraction of his hard-earned wisdom. I'll wait for a second edition, but this one is going back to Amazon.
